Fergus Campbell shares his Meaning of Life

Fergus Campbell, head of communications at Gumtree, conducts his personal stock take

What was your childhood ambition?

To fly on Concorde!

How did you get into corporate communications?

Student journalism led to marketing; marketing led to PR agency land; PR agency land led to in-house

What do you love about it?

The variety and pace of the challenge. And the way that mere comms mortals can use the carrot and stick of ‘reputation’ as a way of shifting a company’s objectives and focus (over time)

What three qualities do you look for in recruits to your team?

Complementary skills, enthusiasm and chemistry

Who has been your best advisor or mentor and why?

My first boss. She took a genuine interest in my personal progression, and I learned a lot in a short period

Which living person do you most admire?

My wife

Do you possess any hidden talents?

Outside of the day job I mentor those trying to break into the industry

If you could be a superhero just for one day, which one would you be?

You can’t beat Superman

Outside of work, what are you most passionate about?

My family

If you could change one thing in the world, what would it be?

The sometimes short-sighted and self-serving decisions made by the world’s political elite

What would your perfect gadget or app do?

Not feel like an app at all

If you could go back in time to any period of history, what would it be?

Jurassic, so I can get a selfie with the dinosaurs. My toddlers would love it!

Who would be on your guest list for a fantasy dinner party?

Too many to narrow it down

And the meal?

Something simple. I wouldn’t want it to distract from the guests and chit-chat
