The professional maze
Alex Gordon-Shute, founder, Ithaca Partners, outlines the challenges candidates face to achieve their dream job. She will explain the recruitment process, realistic timelines and how the jobs pyramid means that fewer roles exist at more senior levels.
What skills are we looking for?
A panel discussion featuring Andrew Brown, director of communications and public affairs, Ageas and Abbie Sampson, director of external affairs, Energy UK; other panellists to follow
What I wish I’d known at the start
Christina Mills, former director, group communications and reputation, SAB Miller, and currently consulting partner at Finsbury, considers the advice that would have been useful starting out on her career, and what she has learned since then
All participants will answer questions from the floor
Abbie is a strategic communications and public affairs specialist with extensive experience in media relations, who has worked at 10 Downing Street and consumer affairs organisation Which?
Alex founded Ithaca Partners in 2008 because she had lost faith in the search profession’s collective drive to excel, and felt that she needed to ‘put her money where her mouth was’ by starting her own firm to show how well search could deliver for clients. Her experience and skills in search span multiple sectors, but always in the Corporate Affairs and Investor Relations arenas. Before starting Ithaca Partners Alex worked for The Rose Partnership, Odgers Berndtson and Taylor Bennett. Prior to her career in search, she worked as the Communications Director for FTSE 250-listed insurer Hiscox, and as a Fast Streamer in the Foreign & Commonwealth Office. Alex graduated from Durham University.
Andrew is a creative and results-orientated communications professional with a 20-year track record working within and leading blue chip communications and corporate affairs teams, such as Drax Power and Regus
Christina has extensive experience helping organisations manage their reputation with key stakeholders. Among the senior roles she held are director, group communications and reputation at SABMiller; global head of media relations, Rio Tinto and head of media relations, Abbey National
Wayne started Birchwood Knight in February 2009 and is responsible for the overall direction of the business. He actively recruits for senior level in-house corporate affairs positions.
