US car manufacturer Ford is giving motor shows the slip for the first time this summer in favour of a digital launch for the 2011 Explorer.
After a steady stream of teaser photos of the SUV on Facebook, initially tantalising dedicated followers with photos of the roof, the cupholders and the button that controls the rear liftgate, the car is finally due to hit roads across the US on Monday, headed up with an opening ceremony in New York and subsequent product demonstrations in nine American cities.
The Facebook page already showcases a fairly comprehensive collection of photographs and videos illustrating the all-terrain credentials of the much-anticipated vehicle, alongside a selection of new features of the 2011 model, such as an EcoBoost engine which promises 30 per cent better fuel economy than the current Explorer model, voice-activated in-car technologies, radar-activated collision warning and inflatable seat belts.
The digital launch follows on from the success of the Ford Fiesta online campaign, which revealed almost all details of the car a year in advance of the official launch.
