The social benefits of the Internet far outweigh any negative effects and 'lowers traditional communication constraints', claimed a survey of 900 technologists by Pew Research Centre.
The Internet allows people to create, cultivate and continue larger social networks than they could maintain pre-Internet days because 'email social networks and other online tools offer 'low friction' opportunities to create, enhance and rediscover social ties that make a difference to people's live,' the survey said.
Geography is no longer an obstacle to social networks as the Internet modifies and extends traditional space in ways that allows people 'to stay aware, share and intersect' with people in other locations.
However, the survey's respondents warned that younger people need to learn to cultivate face-to-face relationships that are both deep and meaningful, instead of relying on the social networks on the Internet.
