The majority of British businesses believe that current environmental policy is unclear and that there is a lack of communication between the Government and climate change agencies, according to a new report.
Seven out of ten businesses want the Government to take the lead in tackling climate change through policy and regulation but just 18 per cent believed that there was genuine communication between government departments, bodies and agencies and cohesive thinking about the issue.
This low result was nearly half that recorded in the global and European averages. But four out of five companies worldwide are unclear about environmental tax incentives and how to apply for them.
The survey, which was undertaken by PricewaterhouseCoopers, found that 94 per cent of British businesses believe environmental laws will affect their operations within the next two to three years, but two thirds believe current policies are confusing.
Mark Schofield, global leader of sustainability and climate change tax at PricewaterhouseCoopers, said: 'As with many tax and regulation issues, the call for action is one for simplification, clarity and long term certainty.
'Business really wants to engage on this agenda and help Government form good policy, which achieves the desired effect.'
