Procter & Gamble keeps score

Procter & Gamble, the Pantene shampoo-to-Fairy washing liquid consumer products group, has launched a Supplier Environmental Sustainability Scorecard to measure and improve the environmental performance of its key suppliers.

The scorecard, which follows the lead of retailing giant Walmart, will assess Procter & Gamble's suppliers' environmental footprint and will measure energy use, water use, water disposal and greenhouse gas emissions on a year-by-year basis.

Bob McDonald, chairman and chief executive of Procter & Gamble, said the launch represented the next step in the company's commitment to environmental sustainability.

He added: 'We will grow P&G's business by touching and improving more consumers' lives in more parts of the world... more completely. To accomplish this, we must continually innovate and grow responsibly and sustainably. Keeping sustainability at the core of our business fuels innovation and strengthens our results.'

The launch follows 18 months' research involving Procter & Gamble's 'Supplier Sustainability Board', which includes more than 20 of the manufacturer's leading suppliers.

The scorecard draws on accepted worldwide measurement standards and existing protocols from agencies such as the Carbon Disclosure Project and World Resources Institute.

Global purchasing officer Rick Hughes said: 'Our suppliers wanted a tool that was flexible yet grounded in existing measurement standards and, by working together, we developed a framework that will help drive real improvement across all industries.'

The scorecard is designed to focus on and encourage year-on-year improvement, and will be rolled out beyond key suppliers once lessons from the first phase are learned.
