London's ‘most sustainable building' will generate a quarter of its power from recycled biodiesel

Auditing firm PricewaterhouseCoopers are looking to match their sustainable credentials with their financial reputation. Their More London offices on the South Bank have been declared London's 'most sustainable building', using biodiesel powered generators to supply 25 per cent of the energy needed to power, heat and cool the office.
As a result, the building emits levels of CO2 that are 74 per cent lower than required under building regulations. Determined to keep their carbon footprint down, they even intend to source vegetable oil for the generators from local hotels and restaurants in the city.
The ten-storey building demonstrates a range of carbon saving technologies, including solar shading, solar hot water panels, green roofs (covered with a layer of vegetation to provide insulation and create a habitat for wildlife), and heat recovery systems. But it is the recycled biodiesel generators that have caused such a stir. On the back of these, the building has just become the first office in England to achieve a BREEAM 'outstanding' rating - the Building Research Establishment's Environmental Assessment Method.
