Construction company Skanska, retailer the Cooperative and electronics firm Canon have all featured amongst the top ten on The Sunday Times 2010 Green List.
This year's winner was Hertfordshire-based stationery company UKOS with a staff of 65, which was recognised for its tiny carbon footprint.
The rankings were derived from two surveys; one of management, the other of employees. The employer review assessed the quality of environmental management policies, training and internal communications on the issue, green initiatives across the supply chain, energy consumption, waste production and disposal, and recycling.
The employee survey asked staff to rate their company's green achievements across four fields - policy, training, communication and performance. Workers had to state to what extent they agreed or disagreed with a number of statements, such as 'my organisation always goes for the cheapest, rather than the most environmentally friendly option' and 'my colleagues would always turn the heating up rather than put a jumper on.'
Richard Caseby, managing director of The Sunday Times, said: 'Making a profit for shareholders is no longer enough. Today companies have a wider responsibility to minimise the impact of what they do on the environment'.
