UPS, the world's largest package delivery service, has become the first carrier to evaluate and grade the sustainability of customers' packaging in protecting contained goods and minimising waste.
Under the Eco Responsible Packaging Programme, customers will have to demonstrate their packaging's efficiency across three areas - effectiveness in protecting its contents, appropriate sizing and use of eco-friendly materials.
Anne Johnson, director of the Sustainable Packaging Coalition, said: 'Embedding environmental evaluation in day-to-day packaging decisions is a critical step to improving the stewardship and conservation of valuable resources for the future. UPS brings an unprecedented scale to assessing the environmental impacts of transport packaging systems and their Eco-Responsible Packaging Programme will raise awareness and continually inform more resource efficient and ultimately, recoverable transport packaging systems.'
UPS continues to demonstrate its commitment to environmental conservation across its supply chain, reducing fuel consumption and carbon emissions and exploring alternative fuel technologies.
