Puma has unveiled a new form of packaging to replace cardboard shoeboxes, significantly reducing paper, water use and carbon emissions.
The 'clever little bag' is made from recycled plastic and contains a single sheet of folded cardboard, using 65 per cent less paper than the old style cardboard box. As a result of the switch, carbon emissions will be slashed by 10 tonnes per year, and water and energy consumption by more than 60 per cent per year. The lighter packaging will also reduce transport costs, saving 500,000 litres of diesel per year.
The new sustainable packaging, created by industrial designer Yves Béhar, is part of the latest phase of Puma's long-term sustainability programme, dubbed 'puma.safe'. Puma also plans to switch plastic and paper bags to biodegradable ones in 2011, as part of a list of sustainable objectives the company hopes to achieve by 2015.
