Nearly a quarter of HM Revenue & Customs staff want to leave within one year and only 18 per cent are proud to work there, according to HMRC's Employee Engagement survey.
Of the more than 53,000 civil servants who were questioned, just one in seven, 14 per cent, said they would recommend their workplace. More than two thirds felt the government department was not well managed and over three in five, 61 per cent, did not have confidence in decisions made by senior management. Only one in five felt a strong attachment to the department.
The report reveals that HMRC ranks badly when compared to other public sector departments, particularly in terms of leadership and change management, and with regard to staff feeling a sense of personal accomplishment.
Chief executive Lesley Strathie wrote in a message to staff that 'we clearly have a considerable way to go. The survey raises a number of significant issues around the way leadership is viewed within the department, which we will focus on in the coming months.'
