The United Kingdom has furnished four of 2010's World's Most Ethical companies, according to rankings published by business ethics think-tank, the Ethisphere Institute.
Mobile phone provider Vodafone Group; pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca; British energy provider the National Grid; and Standard Chartered Bank were all commended for their commitment to good governance, citizenship and environmental sustainability.
America dominated the table, boasting 79 of the 100 companies featured, with a few surprise contenders such as sportswear supplier Nike and Starbucks Coffee Company.
The companies had to demonstrate integrity in their legal history and strong executive leadership on ethics and citizenship, applying fair codes of conduct within the organisation and illustrating engagement with its workforce, suppliers, and the community at large.
The WME (World's Most Ethical) rankings also sought companies taking a driving role within the industry setting policy standards on sustainable development, environmental protection and corporate governance.
