Surrey Council is championing wood fuel in a new sustainability drive

Surrey County Council is looking to develop local policies in favour of wood fuel, after a ringing endorsement from experts in the field citing green benefits, reduced costs and commercial viability. As the most densely wooded region in the country, Surrey has an inexpensive and sustainable fuel source right on its doorstep.
A debate on renewable energy at the University of Surrey had previously rejected proposals to locate commercial wind turbines in the Surrey Hills. But a drive for carbon-neutral wood fuel and sensible advancements in wind power policy both gained significant local support.
Michael Sydney, chairman of the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty Board, said: 'I am convinced this is the way forward to create a low-cost sustainable energy source for the county. Surrey should be leading the field.'
