Brighton council all a-Twitter

Brighton and Hove City Council is to draw up a tweeting policy following a row between councillors over using Twitter during meetings.

Council leader Mary Mears expressed her anger last month after opposition councillors posted messages on the microblogging site while a council meeting was in session. She claimed it was against the constitution of the local authority, saying that council rules clearly prohibit the use of mobile phones in the chamber.

While Councillor Mears considered their activity 'extremely rude', the tweeters stood their ground, citing the benefits of increasing resident participation in council activity.
