It may be 90 miles from London, but the North Northamptonshire Development Corporation has embarked on a £1.3 million three year marketing campaign that describes the region as North Londonshire.
But the news has incensed locals of the region, which includes Corby, the former thriving steel town which never recovered from the closure of its works.
Facebook groups have been set up in protest. The largest, 'Northamptonshire is NOT North Londonshire' attracted 3,000 members in a single week. It demands that the rebranding be stopped and that the North Northamptonshire Development Corporation pay back the £580,000 of taxpayers' money allegedly spent on the campaign to date. Chief executive Simon Evans said: 'This is a London-facing campaign; it is not about rebranding our area. The North Londonshire tagline is clearly going to stimulate awareness of our area and highlight how well-located and connected our business, housing and leisure offers are for the huge market place in London and the South East.'
