Marks & Spencer this week unveiled 80 new ethical and environmental pledges as part of its plan to be the world's most sustainable retailer by 2015. The updated commitments will mean that every one of the 2.7 billion items sold by the retailer every year, across 36,000 product lines, will have at least one 'sustainable or ethical attribute' by 2020.
It has also launched a 'Your Green Idea' competition for customers, offering a prize of £100,000 for the best idea for environmental change, and is stepping up engagement with employees, offering free home insulation.
Marks & Spencer unveiled its ambitious £200 million Plan A in January 2007, which contained 100 commitments designed to make the retailer carbon neutral by 2012. The retailer claims it will save £50 million in 2009/2010 as a result of Plan A.
A recent survey commissioned by Marks & Spencer found that 72 per cent of people are concerned about environmental issues, and that the recession had not changed their views.
