More than 124 million HGV miles have been taken off British roads since the launch of the Efficient Consumer Response (ECR) UK Sustainable Distribution initiative three years ago, it has been announced.
More than 40 household names, including ASDA Stores, Compass Group, PepsiCo UK & Ireland and Tesco Stores, signed the initiative, and now use double decker vehicles or share lorries to deliver groceries to reduce the impact of transportation on the environment.
The miles saved is the equivalent of removing 2,000 lorries from Britain's roads and conserving 60 million litres of diesel fuel every year.
Joanne Denney-Finch, chief executive of IGD, the international food and grocery market intelligence group which spearheaded this initiative, said the results demonstrated that 'even in a highly competitive industry, companies remain committed to minimising environmental impact, meeting customer demands and, at the same time, reducing costs.'
