Brazil's Natura Cosmeticos, which sells natural skin care and cosmetic products through a team of door-to-door consultants, has been cited the world's most carbon efficient company in a new carbon ranking of the world's 1,000 biggest businesses.
The rankings, which have been launched by not-for-profit Environmental Investment Organisation (EIO), place Denmark's bio-innovation company Novozymes in second place and the UK's AstraZeneca in third.
The Capital Rankings Index ranks companies by market capitalisation but includes an additional weighting based on their emission reduction performance. Two other British companies, engineering group AMEC and property business Hammerson, are also in the top ten, at seven and eight respectively.
The bottom three are Petrobras of Brazil, Warren Buffet's investment group Berkshire Hathaway and the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China.
EIO founder Michael Gill hopes that the index will encourage fund managers to invest in proportion to the rankings, thereby increasing pressure on companies to improve their carbon emission policies.
