Evening Standard to launch mobile application

Sheli Rodney is the former editorial and publishing manager of CorpComms Magazine

The London Evening Standard will launch a free application later this month in a move to link newspaper content with social media. Users will be able to share articles via Facebook, Twitter and del.icio.us.
Developed in partnership with US mobile publisher Handmark, the application will be available on all major smartphone platforms. A 'My Feeds' tab will allow users to tailor the application to their own news and features preferences.
'Our goal is to deliver our readers a quality extension to their reading experience when they don't have immediate access to the paper or the London Evening Standard Website,' said Tim Smith, Evening Standard general manager of digital.
Meanwhile, the Standard's former owner DMGT has just launched a free app for its hyperlocal portal Localpeople.co.uk, a site which provides local news and listings for over 70 areas in southern England. It claims to have reached a quarter of local online households in those areas in January. Roland Bryan, strategy director for DMGT division AN Digital, believes the local advertising market could be worth up to £2.8 billion. It is hoped the app launch will help target that market.
