Labelling alcohol

Drinks companies may be forced to put health warnings on alcohol after it emerged that the industry is shunning a voluntary code on labelling.

Just 15 per cent of drinks carry the five messages agreed under a protocol between the industry and the government agreed three years ago.

The voluntary code states that drinks labels should include the number of units, drinking guidelines, warnings to pregnant women and to those trying to conceive and contact details for campaign group Drinkaware.

Up to 22,000 people a year die prematurely from excessive drinking, which has been blamed on the alcohol industry's failure to promote responsible drinking.
