Research reveals safe seats are primarily given to male candidates

The Conservative Party is failing to select women candidates in its safest seats while the Labour Party is selecting '20 somethings' in held seats, according to new research.
'Parliamentary Candidates to Watch', a report by Insight Public Affairs, which analyses 138 parliamentary seats in which MPs are retiring at the next election, found the Conservative Party has selected just nine women candidates for its 36 most winnable seats. By contrast, Labour has selected 46 women for the 76 seats for which it has selected prospective parliamentary candidates (PPCs).
So-called Brown's Babies represent a major thrust of Labour's election attack, with 21 per cent of candidates aged between 25 and 30, and 39 per cent under 35. Bridget Phillipson, 26, will contest the safe Labour seat of Houghton and Washington East, which has a 46 per cent majority.
Just five per cent of Conservative PPC describe themselves as black, Asian or mixed race, against 14 per cent of the Labour Party candidates.
