Chinese understand democracy

A Chinese Twitter user has come up with the most popular definition of democracy in a two-week competition run by the US State Department.

More than 1,400 Twitter users from 30 countries submitted tweets in eight languages for the 'Democracy is...' contest.

The tweet from China-based @zuola was the most re-tweeted by Twitter users, rendering it the most popular. It read: 'Democracy is a set of game rules that, in their gradual process towards perfection, independent individuals and organisations in a civil society seek to maximise their interests by using transparent and non-violent means.'

The State Department said the competition, and The Democracy Video Challenge, had 'expanded the international conversation on democracy'.
