Global usage of social media up 82 per cent on December 2008

Australians are the world's biggest users of social media clocking up an average of six hours and 52 minutes during December, according to new research. The Nielsen Company revealed that Britons spent six hours and eight minutes on social networking sites in December, against a global average of five and a half hours.
Driven by the popularity of Facebook and Twitter, social media usage has risen 82 per cent since December 2008 with more than 300 million users worldwide. Globally, social networks and blogs are the most popular online sites, followed by games and instant messaging.
Facebook remains the most popular social networking site in December. More than two thirds (67 per cent) of all global social network users visited the site during the month, spending an average of nearly six hours.
