Mars, the world's largest confectionery company, has announced an industry first with an initiative to reduce saturated fats in its products, which include the eponymous chocolate bar, Galaxy, Twix, Milky Way and Maltesers.
The move, which has taken five years and an investment of €10 million, will reduce the level of saturated fats by at least 15 per cent with current recipes. A taste panel of 350 experts have confirmed that the quality and taste of Mars' chocolate products have not been impacted by the move.
The first chocolate range to be produced with less saturated fats is Mars bars, and the healthier versions will appear on shop shelves in the summer. More than 600 tonnes of saturated fats will be removed from consumers' diets as a result.
The initiative is the latest by Mars to improve the health ratings of their products, under the 'Raising the Bar' programme, and follows the removal of artificial colours and flavours, reductions in trans fat levels and the introduction of front-of-pack labelling.
