Sweethearts, the heart-shaped sweets that have heralded the arrival of Valentine's Day in America for the past 145 years, will this year carry a new message. 'Tweet Me' will join 79 other sayings such as 'Be Mine', 'Kiss Me' and 'Be True' this year after an online survey asked customers to suggest the next Sweetheart message.
More than 10,000 people responded and 'Tweet Me' was the clear favourite, followed (by some distance) by 'Text Me' .
Biz Stone, co-founder of Tweeter, told USA Today said: 'It's even more proof that people can say anything in short messages. A 140 character message may seem short. Sweethearts are even smaller.'
'We've always been short and sweet,' said Jackie Hague, vice president of marketing at New England Confectionery, maker of the Sweethearts brand. 'In this case, the technology merged with the ritual.'
The company will be hoping that this association, which is not costing Twitter anything, proves more successful than its tie-in with teen movie Twilight last year. Key phrases from the film and book were placed on some sweets, but 'Bite Me' was swiftly withdrawn after parents complained it was rather sexually suggestive.
