New developments in London are cutting their carbon emissions by one third, according to a report by London South Bank University.
It found that carbon savings from new developments increased from an average of 29 per cent in 2006 to 34 per cent above basic building requirements last year.
The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, has pledged to cut emissions by 60 per cent by 2025 and launched 'Planning for a Better London' which suggested that developers could go beyond basic building requirements and incorporate low carbon measures in new developments.
Many used initiatives such as energy efficient lighting, combined heat and power units and on-site renewables in their developments. Johnson is now introducing a three-year target to reduce carbon emissions in new developments by 44 per cent.
