Supermarket giant J Sainsbury has become the first retailer to offer customers a facility to recycle energy saving light bulbs and batteries.
The scheme, which is being run in association with specialist light bulb recycling company Recolight, will launch at the end of the year and will be rolled out across up to 200 of Sainsbury's larger stores by the end of January.
Jack Cunningham, environmental affair manager at Sainsbury's, said: 'Energy-saving light bulbs contain a minute amount of mercury and it is therefore important to recycle them.' Currently, it is only possible to recycle end-of-life energy saving light bulbs at 1,100 civic amenity sites across the country.
All light bulbs and batteries collected will be sent for recycling at approved treatment facilities, while the cleaned glass will be used in new light bulbs.
