School children in Wakefield in West Yorkshire will today choose between chilli con carne, spaghetti Bolognese or fishcakes with wedges for their lunch.
The council's catering service has started to tweet menus to parents every morning, allowing them to check out what their children are being offered to eat.
The move follows a similar initiative in Somerset which was prompted by research by the School Food Trust, which found that young children are often unable to tell their parents what they had to eat at school or inadvertently misinform them.
Chris Wainwright, director of communications at the School Food Trust, said: 'With this trial, parents will be able to ask what children thought about the food on offer, and which lunch option they chose. It gives parents the information they need to start discussions about healthy food.'
