Standard Chartered, the international banking group headquartered in London, has signed a four year sponsorship agreement with Liverpool FC.
The agreement is said to be worth £80 million, making it the most lucrative in football history alongside the deal recently signed between insurance brokers AON and Manchester United.
Standard Chartered will become club sponsors in July 2010, replacing brewers Carlsberg, who have sponsored Liverpool FC for the past 17 years. However, the new deal far exceeds Carlsberg's reported £7.2 million annual agreement.
Managing director Christian Purslow said the sponsorship deal would be the first step toward transforming Liverpool into the 'biggest football team in the world'.
He said that the deal would also boost Liverpool's presence in the Far East, where Standard Chartered is one of the leading high street banks. 'Most branches in these countries will effectively be a shop window for Liverpool football club and a means of attracting more supporters to the cause,' added Purslow.
