Water issues top environmental concerns

More than nine out of ten people believe that water pollution is a serious problem and while 91 per cent are concerned about a shortage of fresh water, according to a new poll.

The survey, which was supported by brewing giant Molson Coors, found that 78 per cent of respondents believed that companies will need to offer 'significant help' to solve the problem of ensuring there is enough clean drinking water for the world's population implying that partnerships may prove an important component to resolve the world's fresh water sustainability challenges. But the survey of 1,000 people in each of 15 countries, including China, Mexico and Russia, also revealed that the majority believe governments are responsible for ensuring clean water.

Three quarters of Mexicans are most concerned about the lack of water for agriculture, while 60 per cent of Indians are concerned about the cost of water.

More than five million people die every year due to a lack of safe drinking water, while the United Nations estimates that 5.5 billion people will lack adequate access to clean water in the next 20 years.
