Phone giant BT is writing to local authorities across the country inviting them to adopt a red telephone box.
The 'Adopt a Kiosk' scheme has already resulted in more than 770 applications from local communities, and parish councils have taken ownership of more than 350 kiosks.
For just £1, BT will remove the telephone and hand over ownership of the kiosks to the local community. It believes there are currently 6,700 red kiosks suitable for adoption.
BT is also offering £5,000 for the most innovative use of adopted kiosks. Many have been converted to local visitor information centres but one in Settle, North Yorkshire has been opened as an art gallery - believed to be the world's smallest.
There are currently more than 12,500 red telephone kiosks and 41,500 payphone kiosks, but usage has halved over the past two years and ten per cent are used just once a month.
