Twitter, the fast growing social media site, is to be included in the 30th anniversary edition of the Collins English Dictionary, which will be published later this year, as both a verb and a noun. Using less than the 140 characters traditionally assigned to a Tweet, the entry under noun will read: 'a website where people can post short messages about their current activities' while under verb, it will read: 'to write short messages on the Twitter website'.
Twitterati, referring to users of the website, and Twitterverse, defining the website and its users, will also be included.
Rival dictionary Merriam Webster, however, still defines Twitter as a verb meaning 'to utter successive chirping noises' or as a noun meaning 'a small tremulous intermittent sound'.
