Colin Farrington, director general of the Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR), has taken a period of extended leave for personal reasons.
His departure comes just weeks after the CIPR moved from its headquarters in London's exclusive St James's Square to newly refurbished premises in Russell Square, Bloomsbury.
Deputy director general Ann Mealor will take over Farrington's duties during his absence. He will not be attending the CIPR's annual Excellence Awards on 7 July.
CIPR president Kevin Taylor has written personally to key members to explain the news, adding that Mealor 'will take up the reins with my full support, and that of the CIPR board'.
Farrington is expected to return in the autumn.
In a statement to members, Taylor said that the CIPR would be continuing with 'our very full programme of activities'.
