Social media still ranks lowly among the majority of recruiters, with just networking and local press ranking lower, according to a recent online survey by recruitment software firm Candidate Manager.
Of the 14 per cent of companies that are using social media to attract applicants, an overwhelming 92 per cent use LinkedIn; the professional social network currently has more than 135 million users worldwide.
The How do you recruit? survey found that more than two fifths of those companies who use social media for recruitment purposes choose Facebook while just less than a third use Twitter.
The careers section of a corporate website was considered the most effective source for candidates, with one quarter of respondents scoring it the highest. Job boards ranked the second most effective.
In joint third position were agencies and employee referrals, receiving 17 per cent of the votes.
Almost a third of respondents said that their organisation does not advertise job positions on their Intranet, while 84 per cent of the firms that do said that it is effective in the hiring process.
More than half cited a faster hire time as their main recruitment objective for 2012, with more than a quarter taking between four and six weeks. Another half cited lower cost per hire, with more than ten per cent costing £3,000 or more per role.
The survey involved 276 respondents, and was carried out across various channels, which included email, social media, online communities and forums.
