Starbucks serves up a hearty dose of AR

Coffee chain Starbucks has updated its 'Cup Magic' app in time for Valentine's Day, allowing users to experience Augmented Reality (AR) features that come 'to life' on their coffee cup.

Smartphone users can hold their phone's camera up to the picture of the heart that is printed on the limited edition Valentine cups, it will turn into a heart-shaped flower and its petals will appear to fly off the cup.
 
Users can download the 'Starbucks Cup Magic' app and create a personalised Valentine's Day message for a loved one. The receiver of the 'Virtual Valentine' can scan a Valentine cup with their camera to reveal their personal message.
 
The Valentine edition of the app is only available to users in the US, and is available to download on the Apple iTunes store.
