Larger universities struggle with social

Larger UK universities are struggling to master social media, according to an analysis conducted by the LSE (London School of Economics) Impacts blog team.

The analysis compared UK university size with recent research by Searchmetrics which produced a 'social media visibility' score for 20 Russell Group universities, looking across their presence on Facebook, Twitter, Linked-in and Google+ .

'The results suggest that larger universities are having more difficulty in getting their social media presence off the ground, while LSE, Cambridge and Oxford are well ahead in this field,' the LSE researchers say.

The University of Oxford has 400,000 likes and more than 20,000 people talking about it on Facebook compared to Cambridge, which has 130,000 likes and  3,000 people talking about the university. Oxford has around 11,000 full time students.

The LSE has nearly 40,000 likes and nearly 9,000 full time students.
