Augmented reality enabled goggles could revolutionise the job of crime scene investigators, allowing them to virtually explore a crime scene and keep a record of it before evidence is removed for analysis, according to developers at the Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands.
The new technology involves a head-mounted display that receives 3D video footage from a pair of attached cameras that are controlled by a laptop carried on the user's back.
This arrangement allows the user to see their surroundings while also allowing them to overlay virtual items, by various hand motions. By moving the hand, a menu will appear, and moving it to the left and right will allow the user to tag objects in the crime scene. If the user moves their hand back and forth then they can select a variety of virtual tools.
The creators now plan to test the system in a real-world crime scene alongside the Dutch police force.
