Majority of UK MPs on Twitter

More than half of all MPs now use the microblogging site Twitter, according to Tweetminster.

Tweetminster states that 330 MPs, out of a total of 650, have now set up Twitter accounts. 

This represents a rise from 234 MPs in January 2011. In December 2008 there were just four MPs with accounts on the site.
 
Tory MP Grant Shapps, who is now the housing minister, is credited with being the first MP to join Twitter; he signed up in March 2008.
 
The MPs with the most followers are Ed and David Miliband, Nick Clegg, William Hague and Tom Watson. Louise Mensch's account was one of the most active Twitter feeds amongst MPs in 2011.
 
Two MPs have two accounts, according to Tweetminster.
 
More than 300 million people around the world use Twitter, which was set up in 2006.
