FBI to monitor social networks

The FBI has mooted plans to monitor social networks more systematically in an attempt to better respond to crises and monitor terrorist activity, it has been reported.

The information comes from a document released on 19 January, which invites pitches from companies able to design a monitoring system for the Bureau, and outlines what is wanted from the system. Would-be contractors must reply by 10 February.

The Bureau's wishlist calls for the system to be able to search automatically 'publicly available' material from Facebook, Twitter and other social sites for keywords relating to terrorism and surveillance and online crime.

Law enforcement agencies could also be helped by 'pattern-of-life matrices', which could log the daily routines of targets.

The document also indicated that the Bureau wants to use social media to target specific users or groups of users. It notes that agents need to 'locate bad actors..and analyse their movements, vulnerabilities, limitations and possible adverse actions'.
