What is Australia Day?
The day marks the anniversary of the First Fleet landing in Sydney Cove in 1788.
Why was that important?
The First Fleet was made up of 11 ships that sailed from Britain in order to set up a colony in Australia. It is regarded as the date British sovereignty began.
So it has been celebrated for more than 200 years?
No, it is actually quite controversial. There have even been lots of attempts to change today's name.
What other names have been suggested?
It has been called Day of Mourning, Invasion Day and Survival Day.
That doesn't sound like celebrating boomerangs and kangaroos to me.
No. It is because indigenous Australians were not so happy about the European settlers. It is only since 1994 that it has been a national day of celebration.
What happens now?
Everyone has a day off work and it is largely regarded as the largest annual public event in the nation. There is also the Australia Day Thong Challenge.
What is that all about?
Havaianas, the Brazilian flip flop company, provide huge inflatable flip flops to those who register. Last year, New South Wales set a World Record for getting 2,068 giant Havaianas inflatables on the water.
So is there lots of barbecues and surfing?
Yes, and the major cities hold outdoor concerts, sports competitions and fireworks. Australia Day honours are also awarded.
Who is on the list this year?
A total of 439 people received awards including cricketer Ricky Ponting, Wallabies stars Stirling Mortlock and George Smith and sailor Jessica Watson have received awards.
Was it just sports people?
No, civic leaders, scientists and artists were also on the list. Australian foodie icon, Maggie Beer, was also awarded the honour for promoting Australian cuisine.
Australian Cuisine? Kangaroo burgers and koala sausages?
She actually became famous for her pheasant. Apricot paste also seems to be flavour of the month.
So is there anything happening here?
There will be celebrations tonight and don't worry if you are not Australian as apparently you will be welcomed with 'open arms and loads of beer'
