Six out of business owners want to impose a ban on social media in the workplace because they believe social media-related activities are eating into their profits, according to a survey done by pollsters Australian StollzNow Research.
At the same time, almost seven out of ten small to medium sized businesses said that they are not concerned about the impact of the Internet on their takings.
The top reason cited by small and medium sized businesses for using social media was to interact with customers (74 per cent). While more than a third praised social media for generating sales leads, more than pne quarter said that they use social media channels to make direct sales.
Will Irving, group managing director at Telstra Business, which commissioned the research, said: 'Adding new customers is the top priority for two-thirds of small and medium sized businesses in 2012 and building a stronger web presence can do just that. Social media has emerged as a prime growth area with just over one-in-five small and medium sized businesses are now using it in their operations.'
