Can it really be true?
Yes. Wikipedia is going offline for 24 hours on Wednesday 18 January.
Oh no. Where will the world's journalists go for their research?
Perhaps they will have to pick up the phone.
How retro!
I know!
So why is Wikipedia doing this?
The Wikimedia Foundation said on Monday that the Wikipedia community had chosen to blackout its English version to protest against the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) in the House of Representatives, and the Protect IP Act (PIPA) in the Senate.
SOPA sounds like Spanish hand wash or something.
Wrong. It's a piece of legislation focusing on Internet intellectual property laws.
What is wrong with the legislation?
'If passed, this legislation will harm the free and open Internet and bring about new tools for censorship of international websites inside the United States,' said the Wikimedia Foundation, which operates Wikipedia, in a statement on its website.
Is Wikipedia alone in its opposition to the law?
No. Wikipedia's move follows the lead of other Internet sites, including social news site Reddit which will blackout its site for 12 hours on the same day.
