The Lord Chief Justice has ruled that journalists and legal commentators can now tweet to their hearts' content from inside the courts in England and Wales.
His guidance, entitled 'The use of live text-based forms of communication (including Twitter) from court for the purposes of fair and accurate reporting', states that journalists will no longer have to make a formal application to use Twitter, text or email. He announced: 'Twitter as much as you like.'
However, he warned that this new rule may be withdrawn at any time if it interferes with the administration of justice in court proceedings.
Members of the public have not been awarded the same rights, and will still have to make an application if they wish to use handheld devices in the courts.
The new allowance applies only 'to those parts of the proceedings which are not subject to reporting restrictions'.
