Who is the most generous of them all?
The answer lies with the Charities Aid Foundation. It has just released its 2011 World Giving Index, which rates countries from around the world in terms of how charitable they are.
And how do the Brits fare?
Not too badly you'll be pleased to hear. Despite our depleted coffers, the Brits managed an impressive fifth position.
That's better than last year isn't it?
Yes, we've moved up three positions from eighth.
So who has been ranked the most charitable nation then?
The US is the most generous, according to the index.
Did it top the charts last year too?
No, last year Australia and New Zealand shared the title. But this year they have been pushed into third and fourth place, respectively.
Who else beat us to it?
The Irish gained three percentage points on last year's score, rising to second place.
What has changed in global giving behaviour over the past year?
The percentage of people donating money has dropped by one percentage point.
Oh dear, that doesn't sounds too good!
It's not all bad news. While the money has dipped, the percentage of people volunteering and helping strangers has increased, according to the foundation.
And which group is being helped the least?
Those aged between 15 and 24.
You said that donations are down on last year, is this due mostly to the women or the men?
The biggest decrease has been amongst women.
Which countries didn't do so well?
Vietnam didn't fare too well, placing 125th.
