Police from the West Midlands have launched a consultation in a bid to find out how best to use social media for communicating about police initiatives.
Members of the public are being invited to complete an online questionnaire about social media tactics for the West Midlands Police.
In the past, various police forces have been criticised for wasting time and money on social media efforts.
Greater Manchester Police had a Twitter campaign to tweet incidents that happened during a regular day. The initiative was seized on by Fiona McEvoy from the TaxPayers' Alliance, who said: 'The police should be catching criminals, not wasting time on social websites... These diversions are not necessary and ultimately cost the taxpayer money.'
West Midlands Police also launched a Christmas social media campaign on 5 December, and the officers will be tweeting throughout the festive period from @WMPolice. The force says it hopes the campaign will help reduce crime by providing the public with tips on how to keep themselves and their belongings safe over the Christmas month.
