Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has been left red-faced after an offensive re-tweet was posted from his personal @MedvedevRussia Twitter account, for all of his 741,000 followers to see.
Although the tweet was quickly discovered and removed from the account, followers took screen shots of the tweet, which soon went viral.
A Kremlin member of staff has been accused of posting the offending tweet that ridiculed recently jailed election protest leader Alexei Navalny.
The original tweet came from United Russia party MP Konstantin Rykov, and according to the BBC it roughly translates as: 'Today it became obvious that if somebody writes the phrase 'party of swindlers and thieves' on a blog, he is a stupid (obscenity) sheep.'
The Kremlin has since issued a statement, which said: 'During a planned change of password, a member of staff responsible for the account's technical support carried out an unacceptable intervention into the @MedvedevRussia account. The guilty will be punished.'
