New initiative promotes sustainable Christmas trees

A new programme promoting sustainable Christmas trees is under way in America, and to date five Oregon tree farms have signed up to the initiative.
The campaign will see each tree bearing a tag that will identify its origin as a Socially and Environmentally Responsible Farm (SERF).
The SERF tag asserts that the tree has been grown using socially and environmentally responsible methods. To achieve these standards, the farms must create a plan addressing five key areas, which include biodiversity, soil and water resources, pest management, worker health and safety measures and consumer and community relations.
In order for a farm to be certified as a SERF, it must be inspected by the Oregon Department of Agriculture, and the final decision then lies with the Pacific Northwest Christmas Tree Growers Association.
The sustainable Christmas tree farms support local economies, and are family-run. The trees can also be recycled into compost which removes the need for any waste to go to landfill sites.
The west-coast state of Oregon is the leading producer of Christmas trees in the US.
