A new service that allows large corporations with complex supply chains to easily measure and manage their carbon footprint, has been launched by sustainability consultants Best Foot Forward.
Best Foot Forward has been testing its new 'Product Portfolio Footprinting (PPF)' service on firms which include PepsiCo and Tesco, in a bid to help them measure emissions across their supply chains.
Andrew Yeo, head of supply chain carbon reduction at Tesco, said: 'Tesco is committed to reducing the footprint of our full product range by 30 per cent, by 2020. Meeting this target requires rapid action across our business and supply chain.'
Simon Miller, director of Best Foot Forward, said: 'In the last 12 months there has been a shift from isolated product footprints to more strategic approaches, based on larger sets of data. This trend was clear from the release of Unilever's Sustainable Living Plan in November last year, and now many larger businesses are looking for ways to reduce their total footprint in the most intelligent, efficient way. It's estimated that the top 100 companies together control more than one quarter of the key resources in global supply chains. Changing what those companies do can have a huge impact.'
Miller said that large organisations are increasingly setting more ambitious sustainability targets which go beyond their own operations, requiring a new approach of measurement and management.
The PPF service has been proven faster than 'Lifecycle Analysis', an alternative system used to footprint products. For example, Best Foot Forward used the PPF to analyse more than 300 products for Crown Paints in fewer than ten weeks, while Lifecycle Analysis has been known to take weeks to provide results for just one product.
