More than 60 per cent of MPs believe that a statutory register will help the democratic process, according to figures published by Populus.
Populus polled 115 MPs between 10 November and 5 December. Data were weighted by political party to be representative of the UK Parliament.
The researchers asked MPs to what extent they believed with the following statement: 'The democratic process will be helped by a statutory register of those engaged in public affairs.'
The Liberal Democrats were most supportive of the link between a statutory register and an improvement of the democratic process with 67 per cent strongly agreeing with the statement. This compared with a figure of 35 per cent for Labour and 15 per cent for the Conservatives.
Nearly half of Tories said they agreed broadly with the statement compared to 79 per cent for the Labour Party and 89 per cent of the Liberal Democrats.
Only six per cent of all MPs were in strong disagreement with the above statement, all of whom were Tory.
More than two fifths of all MPs agreed that based on their own personal experience of public affairs, further regulation of the industry is necessary.
Further details of the poll can be found here.
