Unilever has beaten its own record in the Guinness Book of World Records after it achieved its target to get more than 37,800 children to wash their hands simultaneously at a venue in the Nigerian city of Lagos.
The aim of the campaign was to highlight how small steps such as hand washing can make a big difference in the fight against illnesses such as diarrhoea, which is a killer in Nigeria. It also tied in with Unilever's product portfolio, which includes hygiene-related brands such as Dove, Radox and Simple.
Dr Jemilade Alonge, director of family planning at Lagos State Ministry of Health, said that hand washing plays an important role in achieving Millennium Development Goals, as it can prevent all manner of diseases.
Unilever entered the Guinness Book of World Records with Lifebuoy soap in October last year, in Kenya, for the most people washing their hands with a total of more than 19,350.
